Hearing can be substantially affected by noise levels above 80 dB(A) especially when there is a history of long term exposure. However hearing damage can also be caused by exposure to short term loud noises for example cartridge-operated tools and guns.
The Noise at Work Regulations therefore set three levels where action must be taken to reduce noise. These three action levels are:-First Action Level 85 dB(A) Second Action Level 90 dB(A) Peak Action Level 200 Pascal's. Both employer's and employees have a duty to try and reduce the amount of noise that they are exposed to. |
