The Regulations are contained in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1994 and came into force on 16th January 1995 (consolidating the 1988 regulations). These Regulations have since been amended and superseded by the 1997 Regulations. The Regulations have a very wide scope and impose controls over: chemicals, dusts, micro-organisms, biological agents and respiratory sensitisers. These Regulations also apply in offshore operations.
