Employees Carried on Mobile Work Equipment

If employees are carried on mobile work equipment either as the operator or as a passenger, the employer must ensure that any risks of injury from falling, especially under wheels or tracks are reduced. If the work equipment was not designed for the carrying of passengers (such as a farm trailer during harvest), then the item of equipment would probably need to be adapted to ensure the safety of the same.

  • the following should be considered for both operator and any passengers.
  • seating with suitable restraint harnesses.
  • suitable protection from above, sides or rear such as an enclosed cab depending on the accessed hazards.
  • guard-rails to prevent falling this includes getting on and off safely.
  • restrictions on speed when carrying passengers.
  • if passengers are standing then handholds need to be provided.
  • Guards fitted over wheels and tracks to prevent persons falling under them.

These measures may be permanent or temporary depending on the normal use of the equipment.
