Fire Definitions

Compartment

A part of a building separated from other parts of the building by fire resistant walls and / or floors and ceilings.
Emergency Lighting

Lighting that is provided in the event of failure of normal lighting so that the escape route remains safe.

Final ExitThe last exit at the end of an escape route.
Fire DoorA Fire resistant door.
Fire ResistingA material, which remains safe for a specifically stated period and conforms to the necessary British Standard.

Place of Safety

An area (normally) outside of the building where the person will remain safe from the affects of fire.

Protected Route

A route where fire resistant materials have been used to provide added protection.

Protected Lobby

A fire resistant entrance providing access to a stairway, entrance and egress through 2 fire resistant doors.

Protected Stairway

A stairway, which is separate from adjacent areas and leads to a place of safety.
Storey ExitAn exit from upper floors of a building, through which, people are no longer at risk.
