Part
1, section 6 of the 1974 Act places general duties upon manufacturers etc as regards
articles and substances used at work (this includes any articles or substances
imported or supplied) as follows: - All
articles are designed and constructed to be safe when used properly

To carry out testing and examination to ensure their safety

Provide adequate information about the use for which the article was designed

Provide adequate information about conditions required to ensure that the article
is safe when used

Carry out any research necessary to eliminate or minimise any risks to health
and safety which the design, article or substance may give rise to

Where the supplier / manufacturer erects or installs an article for use in the
workplace, that it is erected / installed in such a way that it does not increase
any risks to health and safety when properly used
